Reconceptualizing Constructivist Epistemology in K–12 Curricula: A Critical Interrogation of Scaffolded Knowledge Transfer Under Cognitive Load Constraints

Contemporary constructivist frameworks, long canonized within K–12 pedagogical design, increasingly face empirical scrutiny when evaluated against cognitive load theory and dual-process models of learning acquisition. This study systematically re-examines the foundational assumptions of Vygotskian scaffolding as operationalized in differentiated instruction environments across four national education systems. Employing a mixed-methods design incorporating psychometric assessment batteries, classroom discourse analysis, and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) of longitudinal achievement data (n = 2,847), findings indicate that schema-contingent scaffolding yields statistically significant gains only when intrinsic load is modulated through adaptive sequencing. These results challenge the uncritical adoption of zone-of-proximal-development constructs in heterogeneous classrooms and propose a revised epistemological taxonomy for curriculum architects, instructional designers, and policy stakeholders operating in post-pandemic educational recovery contexts.
