Evaluating the Efficacy of Behavioral Interventions in Mitigating Economic Disparities: A Case Study of Financial Literacy Programs in Rural Appalachia

The persistent economic disparities in rural Appalachia have prompted various behavioral interventions aimed at enhancing financial literacy among local populations. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from a pre-and post-intervention survey of 500 participants with qualitative interviews to assess the impact of these programs on financial decision-making processes. The results indicate a statistically significant increase in financial literacy scores, with an average improvement of 23% post-intervention. Qualitative analysis revealed enhanced confidence in financial management among participants, albeit with noted disparities in engagement levels based on socio-economic backgrounds. Our findings suggest that tailored interventions can effectively address specific barriers faced by rural communities, emphasizing the need for continued investment in such educational initiatives.
