Addressing the Linguistic Challenges of Code-Switching: An Analytical Approach to Cognitive Load in Multilingual Contexts

Abstract

This study explores the intricate phenomenon of code-switching among bilingual speakers and its implications for cognitive load. The research identifies the environmental and linguistic factors that contribute to language alternation in naturalistic settings. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted a series of experiments involving both qualitative interviews and quantitative analysis through eye-tracking technology. Our findings indicate that higher cognitive load during code-switching manifests in increased pause duration and hesitations in speech. Additionally, we demonstrate the significance of socio-pragmatic context in shaping speakers’ linguistic choices. This research fills a critical gap in the existing literature by quantitatively examining the cognitive ramifications of code-switching, thereby providing insights for educators and linguists alike.
