Phonetic Variation in Urban Dialects: A Case Study of New York City English

Abstract

This article investigates phonetic variations in urban dialects, with a focus on New York City English. Through acoustic analysis and sociolinguistic interviews, the study examines how social factors such as age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status influence phonetic features. The findings highlight significant variations in vowel pronunciation and consonant articulation among different demographic groups. This research contributes to the understanding of language variation and change in urban settings, offering insights into the dynamic nature of dialects in metropolitan areas.
