Deciphering Sociolinguistic Shifts: Mitigating Language Attrition in Multilingual Urban Communities

Abstract

This study investigates the pervasive issue of language attrition among multilingual populations in urban settings, focusing on the sociolinguistic dynamics that contribute to this phenomenon. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted extensive surveys and in-depth interviews within three diverse urban communities, analyzing linguistic patterns through quantitative metrics and qualitative insights. Our results indicate a significant correlation between socioeconomic status and the prevalence of language loss, with lower-income communities experiencing heightened attrition rates. Furthermore, we identified critical factors, such as intergenerational language transmission and cultural identity, that influence language maintenance. Our findings highlight the urgent need for targeted linguistic interventions to support language retention in urban multilingual contexts. This research not only contributes to the understanding of language attrition but also offers practical recommendations for policymakers and community leaders to foster linguistic diversity.
