A Comparative Analysis of Competing Paradigms in Linguistic Relativity: Evaluating the Influence of Language Structure on Thought Processes

Abstract

This article explores the ongoing debate surrounding linguistic relativity, focusing on contrasting theoretical frameworks that attempt to quantify how language influences cognition. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we collected qualitative data through in-depth interviews with bilingual participants and quantitative data from linguistic proficiency assessments. Our findings reveal significant variances in cognitive processing between speakers of structurally diverse languages, underscoring the necessity of contextualizing linguistic phenomena within socio-cultural frameworks. The analysis corroborates some aspects of Sapir-Whorf hypothesis while challenging others, suggesting that language does not merely reflect but actively shapes cognitive patterns. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between linguistic structures and cognitive processes. The implications of this research extend beyond theoretical linguistics into areas such as cognitive psychology, education, and cross-cultural communication.
