Using advanced econometric models, we analyze historical price trends and market responses to external shocks, including climate change and geopolitical tensions. Our findings reveal that short-term policy interventions, such as strategic stockpiling and export restrictions, can mitigate volatility but may lead to long-term market distortions. We propose a framework for balancing immediate relief with sustainable agricultural practices and recommend specific policy adjustments to enhance market resilience. The insights drawn from our analysis contribute to the ongoing discourse on agricultural policy reform in the face of climate uncertainty.
Dana Campbell Morgan Jones Alex Phillips Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Economic Insights 2024-08-29 2024-08-29 2 3 340 359 The Impact of Digital Currencies on Global Trade Dynamics https://interresearchia.com/index.php/jei/article/view/644
This article investigates the influence of digital currencies on international trade patterns. Exploiting quasi-experimental variation in the State Bank of Vietnam's regulatory tightening cycles, we employ a stacked difference-in-differences estimator augmented with propensity score reweighting to identify heterogeneous treatment effects across firm size, export orientation, and foreign ownership strata. Drawing on a matched panel of 4,817 manufacturing firms from the Vietnam Enterprise Survey, we find that domestically owned small and medium enterprises experienced statistically significant reductions in fixed capital formation (–11.3%) and working capital liquidity ratios (–8.7%) relative to foreign-affiliated counterparts. These results are robust to alternative control windows and survive placebo falsification tests. Our findings carry substantive implications for the optimal design of macroprudential capital flow management tools in emerging open economies.
Quinn Wilson Quinn Gonzalez Dana Turner Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Economic Insights 2024-08-29 2024-08-29 2 3 300 319 Climate Change and Its Economic Impacts on Coastal Regions https://interresearchia.com/index.php/jei/article/view/642
This paper explores the economic impacts of climate change on coastal regions, focusing on vulnerabilities and adaptation strategies. This study applies a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) framework augmented with balance-sheet heterogeneity to reexamine credit creation mechanics across seventeen OECD economies over the period 2010–2023. Employing panel vector autoregression (PVAR) and structural impulse-response analysis, the findings demonstrate that commercial bank lending operates predominantly through endogenous deposit creation rather than intermediated savings mobilization, critically undermining standard loanable funds assumptions embedded in canonical monetary models. Results further indicate that Basel III capital adequacy constraints modulate, but do not fundamentally reverse, endogenous credit dynamics. Policy implications for central bank forward guidance and macroprudential regulation are discussed.
Edward Harris Avery Gonzalez Taylor Lee Taylor Rodriguez Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Economic Insights 2024-08-29 2024-08-29 2 3 270 284 Digital Banking and Financial Inclusion: Challenges and Prospects https://interresearchia.com/index.php/jei/article/view/599
This article examines the role of digital banking in promoting financial inclusion, particularly in underbanked regions. Through a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis of economic indicators and qualitative assessments from leading economists, we provide a robust critique of the prevailing paradigms that have shaped monetary policy in recent decades. Our findings reveal significant discrepancies between theoretical expectations and real-world outcomes, prompting a need for a fundamental shift in how central banks approach inflation targeting. We propose alternative frameworks that prioritize economic stability and adaptive responses to evolving market conditions, ultimately suggesting a reconfiguration of policy tools to enhance resilience against future economic shocks.
Kim Turner Nico Martin Ashley Smith Sam Jones Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Economic Insights 2024-08-29 2024-08-29 2 3 320 339 Technological Innovation and Economic Growth: A Sectoral Analysis https://interresearchia.com/index.php/jei/article/view/643
This article explores the relationship between technological innovation and economic growth, focusing on specific industry sectors. Existing linear approximations inadequately capture structural breaks and asymmetric transmission mechanisms embedded in fiscal policy cycles. Employing a panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model augmented with cross-sectional dependence corrections and common correlated effects (CCE) estimators, we analyze 42 OECD and emerging-market economies over 1995–2023. Results confirm the existence of dual fiscal regimes governed by public debt thresholds near 72% of GDP, with expenditure multipliers exhibiting pronounced counter-cyclical asymmetry. High-debt regimes yield multipliers significantly below unity, while low-debt regimes sustain above-unity multipliers. These findings carry direct implications for sovereign fiscal consolidation design and macroprudential coordination under post-pandemic budgetary stress environments.
Robin Martin Alex Young Robin Anderson Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Economic Insights 2024-08-29 2024-08-29 2 3 285 299 Sustainable Investments and Green Bonds: Trends and Opportunities https://interresearchia.com/index.php/jei/article/view/600
This article explores the growing trend of sustainable investments and the rise of green bonds in global financial markets.
