Assessing Microplastics Contamination in Urban River Ecosystems: A Case Study in the Thames River Basin

Abstract

The proliferation of microplastics in aquatic systems has emerged as a critical environmental concern due to its implications on biodiversity and public health. This study investigates the presence and concentration of microplastics in the Thames River Basin, employing a systematic sampling methodology combined with spectroscopic analysis using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Our findings reveal significant levels of microplastics, with an average concentration of 120 particles/m³ in urban hotspots, contrasting sharply with rural areas averaging only 30 particles/m³. The study correlates microplastic abundance with urban runoff patterns and wastewater treatment efficacy, demonstrating the need for enhanced regulatory measures. These results underscore the urgent necessity for targeted policy amendments and public awareness initiatives regarding microplastic pollution in urban ecosystems.
