Reassessing the Paradigm of Patient-Centric Biomarkers in Chronic Disease Management: A Critical Re-evaluation of Established Metrics

Abstract

Chronic diseases represent a significant burden on global health systems, necessitating a critical re-evaluation of established biomarkers used in patient-centric management. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative analyses of biomarker efficacy through systematic reviews and qualitative interviews with healthcare professionals across five major hospitals. Our findings suggest that traditional biomarkers fail to encapsulate the complexity of chronic disease progression, leading to misinformed clinical decisions. Specifically, 67% of surveyed physicians reported dissatisfaction with current biomarker guidelines, indicating a pressing need for novel, integrative metrics. This work advocates for a shift towards a more nuanced understanding of patient-specific conditions, emphasizing the integration of patient-reported outcomes and advanced biomarker stratification. The implications of this research extend beyond clinical practice, potentially influencing health policy and resource allocation, thereby reshaping future healthcare frameworks in chronic disease management.
